Sean Holloran is truly one of the more underrated stars of the CBC Cadets Varsity Football team. He led the team’s run to the state championship game against Blue Springs South in 2011.

He led the team not only as an offensive lineman, but, more importantly, as a role model.

Many athletic young men played vital roles in the success of CBC’s football program during the 2011 season. Dalton Demos served as the offensive leader while playing the quarterback position, Darius Carey led the defensive unit, and Antonio Brown was the leading rusher for the Cadets this season.

Although the team was not victorious in the state-championship game, many of CBC’s star players have been heavily recruited by respected collegiate football programs, including Emporia State, Coastal Carolina, and Quincy Universities, as well as the University of Missouri (Junior Aarion Penton).

However, perhaps the most critical on the Cadets football team was the offensive line which paved the way for the accomplishment enjoyed by Demos, Brown, and the remainder of the offensive unit.

The leader of this offensive line was Sean Holloran, a three-year member of the varsity team, who started at multiple positions during his junior and senior seasons while serving as an incredible leader and catalyst for the achievements of his team.

“Sean is my best friend and an amazing offensive lineman. He leads the line with an iron fist and always keeps me safe. I’m going to truly miss playing with him and being around him,” quarterback Dalton Demos said.

Although Holloran was overshadowed by offensive linemen Kevin Holley and Andrew Ness during his sophomore and junior seasons, he eventually ascended to the top of Head Coach Scott Pingel’s offensive line core unit and came to be viewed as such by his teammates.

Clearly Holloran has natural football talent. He stands at 6’4” and weighs in at 280 pounds. His highlight tapes show the incredible athleticism, agility, and strength that he possesses. However, no stat or highlight can truly display Holloran’s importance to his team and his school.

“He openly befriended two transfer kids who are not even in his own class (Kevin Carter and Andrew Shortridge). I don’t know many kids who would do that as easily and willingly as he has. I am truly going to miss his great attitude and smiling face when he graduates,” Math Analysis teacher Mr. Chris Merris said.

Holloran worked very hard during his first three seasons as a member of the CBC Cadets football program and learned much from both Kevin Holley and Andrew Ness. All of his hard work and time spent as an understudy paid off during his senior season.

Holloran led his team to a 13-1 season record as the spearhead of the offensive line and came to be recognized as one of the most outstanding players not only in the metro area of St. Louis, but also in the state of Missouri.

Holoran was selected as a first team All-Missouri and All-Metro St. Louis offensive lineman and was recruited by several Division I universities before signing to play football next fall for Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Yet, his true legacy as a member of the 2011 Varsity Cadets football team will not be as a great athlete or even as a hard working football player, but rather as a great young man who served as a role model to all around him, particularly his teammates. He has acted as a model of “Cadet Class” both on and off the football field.

“Sean is a great person (who) is willing to help others and always tries to find a way to (become a better football player). I’ve never had class with him but people say that [Sean] is a very talented student. Sean is a friend that I will always have in my life no matter what,” teammate LaKel Bass said.

Holloran is a humble young man and athletic football player with a bright future. He is not only a standout football player, but he also carries a high GPA and is enrolled in several Honors and AP courses, including AP Biology and Math Analysis.

Holloran is uncertain about a football career beyond his time at Missouri Western State University. One thing is certain, however; he will be a successful man as long as he continues to follow his dreams, work as hard as he possibly can, and live with due patience and humility.

“Who would have thought in that big football body also exists a strong academic talent as well? Sean has proven that even in a tough course like AP Biology, a focused and consistent work ethic will succeed,” AP Biology teacher Mr. Tom Cummings said.

And…beyond academics and sports, Sean is just one good guy.”

With all the excitement about SLC elections this time of year, The Turret decided to interview SLC member Spencer Holloman to learn about it first-hand.

“I got involved in the SLC because I wanted to be in an organization that helped the school. The SLC seemed like a good organization for me because I had a lot of time on my hands and great ideas in my head,” he said.

“The Student Leadership Council is great because we actually have a say in what goes on. Of course the administration will have a say in what does and doesn’t go but we get to choose so many things. We choose how the pep rallies are run, we plan almost every event and theme for games like Poker night, Sky-Zone night, and we may possibly have a Hidden-Valley night.”

“When you walk through the hallways, I promise you will see shirts and hoodies that the SLC has offered the student body. Some of these are free but the ones that aren’t were given to the students for less than what we paid for them.”

“Every mixer we have gives the SLC money that in turn we give back to the students. We lose money when we give you “packages” and things like Poker Night. I’d say that SLC has a larger impact on this school than most think.”

Members of the SLC spend a lot of time working on a variety of projects outside of school hours.

“We meet every Advisory Period, once or twice during Fall, Winter, and Spring break, every week during the summer for about two hours, and every day for eight hours one week before school starts for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The Student Leadership Council takes a lot of dedication,” he said.
In spite of all of the time commitment, he still enjoys being in SLC?

“I really do. The SLC is a lot of fun. We have heated discussions but that is just because we have so much passion for the school. We are like one big family and I think this year’s photograph of us just proves that,” Holloman said.

But some people claim that SLC is just a “popularity contest?”
“For most, it is. Plain and simple. I came into this school knowing three people: Craig McLaurine, Tyler Kacich, and Nico Cruz and by March, I had more than half of the freshman class voting for me. Why is being popular bad? Being popular doesn’t mean you’re the cool kid who goes out every Friday night to parties. Look at Joe Schrimpf, he has never consumed a drink in his life. Being popular means that you are willing to get out of your shell and talk to people you wouldn’t normally talk to. I said ‘for most, it is’ because not everybody in the SLC is popular.

“I hope he doesn’t mind my saying this, but look at Michael Flom. He ran one of the best campaigns I have ever seen. He wasn’t the most popular guy when HE ran but I’m sure glad he is in SLC because he has the most ideas and is the most dedicated member and that’s why I love the guy. The most popular kid in the school usually isn’t a person in the SLC,” Holloman said.

Would he do it all again?

“I would encourage everybody to run for the SLC. It isn’t something that you should run for because it would look good for colleges. It is an organization that helps the student body. If you are willing to work for your spot and continually come up with great ideas, you would be a good candidate. Again, everybody has a chance. You just have to be willing to work for it.

Seven CBC athletes signed letters of intent on February 1, 2012. Some of the most well-known among them were members of the football team, Dalton Demos and Antonio Brown.

Demos the captain and quarterback on the 2011 team that wen t 10-0 in the regular season, leading them to the state championship game.

He was honored with many awards such as the Army Strong Award, first team all-state quarterback; The Post-Dispatch’s All Metro Team and the Missouri Broadcasters/Writers Player of the Year.

He also has set many records for CBC such as most touchdown passes in a season (34), passing yards in a season (2,764), completions ( 165) and passing attempts(311).
“Dalton has been our catalyst for the last two years at CBC,” football coach Scott Pingel said. “He set virtually every passing record at CBC and his leadership and style of play will be hard to replace next year”.

Demos said his biggest inspiration was his father, who played college and pro football. His goals for college are to be a starting quarterback and just to try his best. He also gave some advice to fellow Cadets to be determined work hard.

He is committed to play for Costal Carolina University. But, he said he would never forget his time at CBC.

Antonio Brown was the key running back for the 2011 CBC football team. Brown was the team’s go-to-guy from the line of scrimmage. He had several long gains of 20+ yards. When the Cadets found themselves in need of short yardage, he was virtually unstoppable.

He was named First Team, All Metro Catholic Conference as a running back both in 2010 and 2011. He also won All Metro Catholic Conference second team All-State, third Team All-Metro, Co-Offensive MVP for CBC, and was selected to the St. Louis “All-American” Prep Football Team for large schools.

He led the Cadets in scoring with 22 touchdowns for 132 points, gained 1,472 yards on 229 attempts – tops on the team this past season. He led CBC in total yards from scrimmage in 2011 with 1,516.

He ends his carrer at CBC with 3,078 yards and 47 touchdowns.

“Antonio Brown’s work ethic and desire to succeed will carry him far in life,” CBC football coach Scott Pingel said.

Brown said the biggest inspiration for him was his mother. Then he said he was kind of a “mama’s boy.”

Brown is going to Emporia State University. He said that this school felt like home to him. He said his goals in college are to play football and study business.

Pre-Registration decisions are due for everyone this Friday, February 10. This year, there is one of the new classes in particular that should be on every sophomore’s list to consider. That is the ACT Prep course that was started last year.

The main goal of the ACT Prep class is to help get students familiar with the setup of the ACT. This will hopefully bring their test scores up.

Taking this class could help a student raise their ACT score by as many as six points. Considering the ACT’s maximum score is a 36, this could make a huge difference.

The class is only a semester long, and could easily fit into one’s schedule. The class is split into math, English, reading, and science teaching sections, to help prepare the students for each of the four parts of the ACT.

The whole point of the class is to either help someone who is not a good test taker, or to help someone who wants to get a higher score on their ACT.

People who can apply are honors freshman, and all sophomores and juniors. This class is ideal for sophomores, as they are more than likely going to take the ACT at least one time their junior year.

However, if you can take it your sophomore year, then that is even better, as you will have the tips earlier on. This will then give you more opportunities to take the ACT using these new tips.

Juniors can still sign up for the class, but if they do, it is important that they get the class in their first semester, as many colleges want applications with ACT scores well before the second semester starts.

This is one of a few newer classes, but it is definitely one of the most useful to all students.
